For October/November FM Oakland is excited to host the recent works by local Berkeley native Paul Thompson. Thompson's work focuses on the romance and excitement of the wild west as he plays with paint, line, brushwork, and composition to depict various scenes. His imagery highlights a range of cowboy life, as it shows the somber loneliness of ranching, to the rowdy and rough “fight or die” culture of bar fights and shootouts. Within that range one underlying aspect remains: his love for cowboy life.

“I always played cowboys and indians with my brother as a kid , and our father loved westerns. He would often play with us and eventually lived in the middle of the Nevada desert. We fantasized being cowboys and when we went to Nevada, I enjoyed meeting real cowboys. It is still romantic and engaging to visit old western towns and imagine living as one. As an adult, I took a tour of old western towns dressed as a cowboy. My mother used to draw with us and encouraged us to draw things that we imagined, so I have been drawing and painting western themes ever since. I don’t make art for money. It is my therapy and as my mother says, we share a healthy addiction.”

FM Oakland is a gallery and private studio space of 10 professional Bay Area artists in the ever thriving Oakland "Uptown" Arts District. We open our doors weekly for Saturday Stroll (1-5pm every Saturday), monthly during Art Murmur (5-9pm first Friday of every month), for gallery receptions, and appointment.
